Watch for Kids going Back-to-School

Rabun County School students will start a new school year on Friday, August 5, 2022, and Rabun County Sheriff Chad Nichols wishes them good luck.  “First, I want to wish everyone a safe and successful new school year.”  Motorists need to watch out for excited kids as they go back to school, adds Sheriff Nichols.  “Keep the safety of the children in mind.  Be mindful around school bus stops where you may see children on the side of the road waiting to get on the bus.  You do have to stop when the stop sign is out and the stop bar.  In Rabun County, you pretty much have to stop approaching or following the bus when they do have the stop out, except on 441 South where the road is divided by a grass median.  So, if you are not in that section of the road, you have to stop when meeting or if you are behind a school bus when the stop signal is out.”  Sheriff Nichols says that deputies will be doing speed enforcement.  “We will have a deputy down there again on 441 at Boggs Mountain, so just be mindful of the speeds in the school zone when the lights are flashing and the traffic is the heaviest.  Of course, we will have deputies down there doing speed enforcement just to keep everyone safe.  Just wait for their signal, slow down, and stay off cell phones.”  Everyone is urged to slow down, take a little extra time to get to work, and be patient with traffic at school zones.
