Tallulah Gorge to be Set on Fire

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is planning a controlled burn at Tallulah Gorge said Nathan Klaus, Senior Biologist for the Wildlife Division on Friday…

“We’re looking at next week. The weather looks like it may be favorable, but controlled burns are totally dictated by getting the right weather, so we kind of have to take whatever nature throws our way and work with that. We rarely know more than about maybe 24-48 hours at best in advance of when we’re going to try and pull something off.”

Klaus says some of the wildlife there depends on fire…

“The variety of plants and animals found there, they’re fairly unique, and many of them are actually dependent on fire for different parts of their life history. So we’re burning to try and maintain that diversity that’s found in Tallulah Gorge and some of the surrounding lands.”

This will be the fifth burn at the Gorge in the last decade.
