Sheriff says Be Patient on First Day of School

More traffic is anticipated on Wednesday as students return to public school in Rabun County.  Motorists are encouraged to slow down and be on the lookout for excited students, says Rabun County Sheriff Chad Nichols.  “I would encourage everyone to keep the safety of the kids as the main priority whether that be watching for kids as they are waiting for the school bus, looking for that bus to stop and the stop arm to come out, and to stop so the kids can cross the road to get on the school bus or to exit the bus at the end of the day to get back to their house.  So, just be mindful of that stop arm.  Also, I would imagine just with the way that the school is kind of set up there will probably be more car riders or more parents taking their kids to school so I would definitely allow more time than you have in the past.  We are working with the school system and we’re going to be there to try to keep the traffic flowing and not backup not to cause any traffic problems but be mindful of those deputies that are going to be directing traffic in those different areas.”  Please be patient, adds Sheriff Nichols.  “Just be patient.  I think I say this every school year, but be patient there is going to be some new traffic control around the school.  So, just be patient, allow you a little extra time so you won’t be stressed out and you can stay on your schedule.  So, I just urge everybody to be patient, maybe leave a little earlier than normal, watch for those school buses, and I hope everybody has a great school year.”  Never pass a stopped school bus, slow down through school zones, and watch out for students waiting for the bus.
