Safety Tips for Outdoor Burning in Rabun County

As you clean yard debris this summer, Rabun County Assistant Fire Chief Justin Upchurch offers these safety tips if you plan to do any outdoor burning.  “Closely supervise all outdoor fires.  Make sure your fire is out before leaving.  Supervise children around any outdoor fire including campfires, fire pits, and outdoor fireplaces.  Avoid burning on windy, dry days.  When outdoor burning is allowed, never use gasoline or any flammable or combustible liquids.  When burning, always have a hose, a bucket of water, a shovel and dirt, or sand nearby to extinguish the fire.  Just remember it is unlawful to burn manmade materials such as tires, roofing shingles, plastic, household trash and garbage, or to burn wiring insulation to obtain the wire.”  Outdoor burning should only be done between 10am and 30 minutes before dark.
