Residents warned about Email Scam

Law enforcement is warning residents about a new email scam involving Amazon.com.  The scam works like this, you receive an email claiming to be from Amazon.com about a recent purchase.  An order number is provided for the purchase as well as a customer help desk number.  When you call the help desk to inform them that you did not make the purchase, an individual tells you that you need to purchase gift cards to stop the purchase.  This is a scam!  Once you purchase the gift cards and give the information to the fraudulent help desk, you are swindled out of that money.  Law enforcement reminds residents that legitimate businesses will not require payment to be made using a prepaid or a gift card.  If someone requests payment to be made this way, it is a scam. Also, if someone calls from a business that claims you owe thousands of dollars, hang up the phone, and place the call to that business directly yourself to verify these claims.
