Rabun County Special Olympics seeking donations to attend state games

ATLANTA — The Rabun County Special Olympics Athletes will soon be headed south for the upcoming state games.

Special Olympics Georgia will be held at Emory University in Atlanta the weekend of May 18 to 20 where more than 2,800 Special Olympics athletes from around the state will gather to compete in aquatics, athletics, soccer, long distance running and walking, flag football, volleyball, tennis, gymnastics and table tennis with over 600 coaches to guide them in competition.

According to Local Coordinator Melody Queen, the Rabun County Special Olympics is a program that is offered for all special needs in the community no matter what the age.

“Without this program,” she said. “Many of the athletes would not have the opportunity to be all that they can be.”

Queen said the cost to attend the state games averages out around $4,000, which covers hotel rooms, food, travel and uniforms for each athlete and coach.

For an organization that offers so much to those in need, she said it is only made possible by the communities charitable donations and welcomes any and all donations.

For anyone wishing to make a contribution to aid in sending the local athletes to the Special Olympics Georgia, donations may be mailed to Rabun County Special Olympics P.O. Box 578 Clayton, GA 30525

“All donations are greatly appreciated,” Queen said. “You will be changing a life forever with your giving. All donations stay in Rabun County and are tax deductible.”
