Rabun Co. Investigators looking into Scam

Investigators with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office are looking into a scam reported by a Tiger resident.  On August 5, 2022, an investigator met with a man, who stated that he received a call from who he thought was Amazon.  The caller asked if he had purchased a computer on his Amazon account and he said no.  The caller said to stay on the line while he was transferred to the fraud department.  The scammer stated that all his accounts had been hacked and that he needed to take money out of his accounts and turn them into bitcoin.  He did so and was told that they would create him an account to hold the bitcoin.  The scammer said that they would make an appointment with the Social Security Office to get his funds back.  He also purchased $3,000 in gift cards and gave the card numbers to the caller.  In total, he lost around $100,000 in the scam.
