Protect Trees in National Forests

The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests are encouraging visitors to protect trees for the generations of hammock users to come when lounging over spring break by buying or gathering your campfire wood where you burn it.  When camping in a national forest, remember to obtain firewood from a nearby vendor or dead and down trees in the National Forest near your campsite.  Do not bring your own firewood to a national forest. The transportation of firewood can spread harmful, invasive insects including the emerald ash borer and diseases like laurel wilt. These threats can eliminate entire tree species and adversely affect the health of national forests.  If you have a permit, you can harvest dead and down trees in many National Forests. You can obtain a permit at your local ranger district office. If you collect a small amount of wood for a fire near a campsite, then you do not need a permit.  To learn more, visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/conf/news-events/.
