Prescribed Fire planned near Eatonton

The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests announces that on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, the Oconee Ranger District will be conducting prescribed fire operations approximately 7 miles northwest Eatonton in Putnam County in the Mt. Gilead area.  The prescribed fire burn unit C-160 is approximately 1,029 acres in size and a portion or all of it may be treated depending on conditions.  The purpose of the project is to remove hazardous fuels such as leaf litter, dead vegetation, and debris as well as to improve wildlife habitat.  Find more info about how the Forest Service in Georgia manages the land with prescribed fire and discover ways to stay in-the-know with all our planned burn projects at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/conf/fire.
