Piedmont College Theatre presents Carousel

Piedmont College Theatre will present Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s classic musical, Carousel February 25-28.  A staple in American regional theatre, Carousel follows the tumultuous love story of swaggering, carefree carnival barker Billy Bigelow and his millworker soon-to-be wife, Julie Jordan, as they both weather losing jobs, cycles of abuse, and questionable life decisions in order to hold on to their life together. At wits end, Billy is willing to do anything to keep his little family afloat, so he agrees to become an accomplice in a robbery. In the throes of the crime, he sees what he has done and takes his own life, only to arrive at the pearly gates and be given a chance at redemption.  “Carousel’s message of forgiveness and redemption is as poignant as it is timeless,” said director Bill Gabelhausen. “In this production we hope to highlight not only the beautiful operatic music, but the musical’s powerful story. By focusing on the light and the dark, the struggling heroine and the anti-hero, and the beautiful opposition in this journey, we hope to relive this musical in its original Golden Age format.”  The theatre has implemented strict health procedures to keep everyone safe. Patrons entering the Swanson Center for this production will undergo a temperature check and must wear a face covering at all times while in the building. Hand sanitizer stations will be available, and everyone is required to maintain social distancing.  Carousel performances are 7:30pm, February 25-27, and 2pm, February 28 on the Swanson Center Mainstage. General admission is $10 and $5 for seniors and students. Piedmont faculty, staff, and students will be admitted for free. In order to ensure socially distant seating, patrons must call the box office at 706-778-8500 x1355 to purchase or reserve tickets.  Photo showing Chandler Allen (right) and Jordan Hicks star as Julie Jordan and Billy Bigelow in Piedmont College Theatre’s production of Carousel.
