Paul Everrett Buchanan Sr.

Paul Everett Buchanan Sr. reunited with his wife on August 21, 2018 at age 91 after a period of declining health. Paul was born in Spruce Pine NC. in 1926 to Audy S. and Mae Duncan Buchanan.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Gyneth Henson Buchanan, his parents, his stepmother Viola E. Buchanan, and a brother Audie Cecile Buchanan of Spruce Pine, NC.

Paul moved to Rabun County in 1951 to work for Fred Elliott as a meat cutter at Elliott’s Market which later became Foodland. Shortly after moving to Clayton he joined the Clayton Volunteer Fire Dept. He served as Chief many times and became a certified state fire instructor in 1976, training many of Rabun County’s firemen over the next several decades. In 1979 Paul was appointed to the Ga State Firemans Association Executive Board and was was a lifelong member of the Georgia State Fire Chiefs association. In 1972, Paul bought a neighborhood grocery store in Mt City, which became Paul’s Pennywise. Paul became interested in local politics in the 70’s serving on the Clayton City Council for many years and eventually becoming Mayor of Clayton in 1983. He and Gyneth retired in 1981 spending the winter months in Lake Wales Fl.

After retiring Paul loved playing golf and catching large bass on Lake Pierce in Fl. He was member of Clayton Baptist Church. He is survived by two sisters Mary Lee Buchanan Duvall of Franklin NC., Evelyn Buchanan Hall of Charlotte NC and a brother James Buchanan of Spruce Pine NC. Three children Judith Buchanan Strickland of Clayton, Belinda and Donald Bradberry of Huntsville Al., Paul E. jr. and Susan Buchanan of Clayton. Paul is Also survived by eight grandchildren, Robert Lesley (Bobby) Houck (Holly), Allison Houck Goodlett (Ivy), Jennifer Bradberry Adams (Andrew), Donald Glenn Bradberry Jr., Kristy Buchanan Rhodes (Bob), and Kelcey Brian Buchanan (Shelly). Twelve great grandchildren Jordan Buchanan, Tyler Wall and Addy Adams, Emma and Juliet Rhodes, Jackson and Michael Goodlett, Madison Houck, Makinzy Long, Maleigha McCraw, Will McCraw and Braelynn Bradberry.

Visitation will be at Beck Funeral Home on Friday August 24, 2018 from 6pm to 8pm and again at 10 am August 25 at the Clayton Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday August 25 at 11am in the sanctuary of Clayton Baptist Church with Pastor Joey Thompson, Pastor David Rogers Officiating. Interment will be at Rabun Memory Park in Tiger Ga. with full Firefighter Honors.
