Overturned tractor-trailer obstructs traffic in Tallulah Falls

Tallulah Falls is no stranger to wrecks and accidents but one tractor-trailer carrying more than 42,000 pounds of steel, caused quite the commotion Friday when it overturned on its side – blocking traffic in both directions.

According to law enforcement who was at the scene, the wreck occurred mid-afternoon Friday as the flatbed was traveling southbound just across the bridge on GA 441.

According to Chief Deputy of the RCSO Mark Jones, as a result of the overturned tractor-trailer, the role of steel that was being transported slid off the truck into the middle of the roadway. Additionally, officials had to work quickly as there was also a diesel and oil spill leaking from the flatbed.

Jones said that fortunately, no one was critically injured but there were some minor injuries which Habersham EMC assisted with and transported the hurt individuals to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The traffic was blocked for more than four hours according to Jones who said that traffic had to eventually be rerouted around the city hall road in Tallulah Falls.

Jones said there were other wrecks occurring around the time of the accident several miles south in Habersham County on 441.

Unfavorable road conditions Friday from recent heavy rains likely played a factor in the multiple wrecks including the overturned tractor-trailer, but Jones said the cause of the accident is still being looked into by the Georgia State Patrol Post 7.

Jones advises the public to use extra caution when traveling in adverse weather, especially on winding roads such as the one in Tallulah Falls.
