Only two days after the departure of Mark Richt from UGA, the Dawgs appear to have their new Head Coach.

According to Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, it was announced late Monday night that Kirby Smart, Georgia alum and son of former Rabun County High School Football Coach Sonny Smart, will be the next leader of the Georgia Bulldogs football program.

Smart has been the mastermind behind the Alabama Crimson Tide’s stellar defense, serving as defensive coordinator for Nick Saban since 2008, and has been on staff at Alabama since 2007. In that time, he has helped Alabama win 97 games and three national championships, as well as coach 24 Crimson Tide defensive players who went on to the NFL Draft.

Kirby Smart could be introduced as Georgia’s new Head Football Coach as early as Sunday, barring any issues in contract negotiations. It won’t be until after Smart fulfills his duties in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta against Florida, that an announcement would be made says the AJC.

Smart played defensive back at Georgia from 1995-1998, where he had 13 interceptions during his career. This will be Smart’s first Head Coaching job, as he has been considered for jobs at Auburn, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, and others in the past.
