Nantahala Fire Department to Open Sub-Station

Around 250 homeowners and businesses in the Nantahala area of Macon County are expected to get a break on their insurance as Nantahala Fire Department prepares to open a sub-station.

County Fire Marshal Jimmy Teem says the department built the sub-station that’s about five miles away from the main station two years ago and has finally obtained enough equipment and trucks to open it.

Last week he received approval from county commissioners for a slight change in the fire district map for Nantahala, which has already been approved by the state.

Teem said the state fire marshal’s office must come and inspect the sub-station before it can begin operating. The changes will result in an improved insurance rating for some residents in Nantahala which could mean savings of up to $200 a year on their policies.
