Mountain Judicial Circuit to Appoint New Public Defender

The Rabun County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday at the Rabun County Courthouse to discuss a variety of topics. One of those, was the discussion of adding another public defender to the Mountain Judicial Court Circuit, that represents Rabun, Stephens, and Habersham Counties.

The reason that this was proposed, was due to increased caseloads, and being chronically understaffed. Habersham and Stephens Counties had approved this, all that was left was for Rabun County to approve, which they did.

When this topic was first discussed in November, it was announced that funding for this position would vary depending on county population. Habersham would pay more, and Rabun County would have to pay the least. At November’s meeting, it was announced that Rabun would have to pay 13% of the salary, or 8,000 dollars.
