“Lots of Details” Involved With Animal Shelter Plans

With Rabun Paws 4 Life working to get everything into place to begin operating the county’s animal shelter and take over animal control responsibilities, the chairman of the Rabun County Commission discusses plans moving forward.

Chairman Butch Darnell said that the commission is moving towards a new agreement, but that it is going to take some time to get everything into place.

“It’s just a lot of details that have to be worked out, as there has to be some termination of contracts, and there has to be some new contracts brought up,” said Darnell. “It’s just a lot of small things out there.”

Darnell also reminded everyone that there are some limitations to the amount of money the county can provide to get the operation off the ground.

“We certainly will be supportive,” said Darnell. “We know there will be a start up cost involved in it, but at the same time, when you’re dealing with budgets and a limited amount of resources like we’ve got, you can’t just all of the sudden make huge changes in that.”

Lastly, Darnell said the commission wants to be sure it is a smooth transition, as to not alienate supporters of Boggs Mountain Humane Shelter.

Darnell says there is not yet a concrete timeline regarding these issues.
