Jackson approves fire tax to reimburse Macon

A long-standing debate between Macon and Jackson Counties may now be settled after a move by Jackson County Commissioners Thursday night.

The Jackson Commission unanimously approved an increase in the fire tax for a district of Jackson County in Cashiers that receives fire and emergency services from Highlands.

The increased tax levied will affect about 330 parcels of land in Jackson County that borders the town of Highlands. The increase in revenue will reimburse Macon County for services provided to that location.

Macon County Commissioners estimate the cost of the services provided to these properties located in Jackson County by Macon County is $160,000 or 13 percent of Jackson County’s projected revenue from the property.

Jackson County currently pays $7,300 to Macon County as compensation for these services.
