IRS scam arises in Rabun

According to the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office, a new scam involving the Internal Revenue Service has arisen.

Of course, scams are no stranger to Rabun County, but this one, in particular, has residents paying out of pocket to the scammer who requests payment in the form of a Google play card, or else the victim will be arrested.

The scammer calls the victim claiming to be with the IRS and requests $400 in the form of a gift card. Then the predator asks the victim to read the pin number on the loaded gift card so they can receive the money without ever meeting in person.

Law enforcement wants you to know that no credible government agency will request money in the form of gift cards, especially over the phone.

Should you receive a scam call of this nature, report the incident to your local authorities and never give out personal information.
