Hunt and Learn Programs from Georgia DNR

Young woman holding a rabbit with a puppyWildlife Resources Division is pleased to continue its series of programs focusing on the development of hunting skills and conservation knowledge.

Children, ages 10-17, and their supervisors are invited to a weekend of hunting and classes in a variety of skills-based and conservation-focused programs. Classes will include the appropriate basics of squirrel, deer, rabbit, quail, falconry or turkey hunting, how to care for harvested game, and more. Hunter Ed classes will be offered for anyone who has not yet taken the course. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of time set aside for hunting!

Adults and children over 16 must possess current hunting licenses (see current state hunting regulations and fishing regulations for more information). You can find license purchasing information here.

Due to the popularity of the Hunt and Learn programs, we are now offering different levels and means of advancement for the programs.

All three level hunters can be accommodated at all Hunt and Learn programs. Participants must have completed Level 1 to advance to Level 2 and likewise to Level 3.

  • Beginner (Level 1) – A participant’s first hunt or second hunt. These are new hunters with little to no experience. It is recommended but not required that participants have attended a previous Hunt and Learns, Youth Hunter Education Course, Family Day at the Range, Advanced Wildlife Camp at the FFA Center, Charlie Elliott Shooting Sports Camp or 4-H BB/Archery. Only the youth may hunt, and they must be accompanied by an adult. The squirrel and falconry hunts are the best hunts for first time hunters with no experience. However, we offer level 1 for all Hunt and Learn programs.
  • Intermediate (Level 2) – The next step for young hunters after entry level hunts. Participants must have participated in a previous Hunt and Learn Level 1 program. Both the youth and adult can hunt at the same time if the guides and Hunt and Learn coordinator are confident with the shooting proficiency.
  • Advanced (Level 3) – Participants must have participated in a previous Hunt and Learn Level 2 program. Both the youth and adult can hunt without a guide. However, they must stay together during the hunt.

Hunt and Learn Programs take place on various Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs):

  • Clybel WMA at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center ($90 per person includes lodging, guide, education, food)
  • Chattahoochee Fall Line WMA ($60 per person includes guide, education and food; primitive camping facilities available)
  • Buck Shoals WMA ($60 per person includes guide, education and food; primitive camping facilities available)

REGISTRATION FOR HUNT AND LEARN PROGRAMS WILL OPEN ON AUGUST 1, 2017 (9 am): At that time, please call (770) 784-3059.  If you register for a quota Hunt and Learn, all names will be put on the quota list and we will draw one month in advance of each event. Others hunts, not designated as a quota, are first come, first served.

Hook and Learn Programs

These programs allow a youth (age 10-17) and a supervisor to stay the weekend and participate in a  variety of skills-based and conservation-focused programs centered around fishing.
