Georgia DOT brines Northeast Georgia roads

In response to possible disruptions to travel on Tuesday due to winter weather, Georgia DOT has been pre-treating major interstates, state routes, overpasses and bridges in across the state since early Monday morning.

The Department has made significant progress in spreading a brine mixture on the roadways to help prevent or limit the build-up of ice amid the expected frigid temperatures. Georgia DOT has completed the following:

  • In Northeast Georgia (GDOT District 1), 12,500 gallons of brine have been spread over more than 313 lane miles.

Remaining GDOT crews are now preparing to deploy immediately following rush hour at 7:00 p.m. across metro Atlanta, as well as parts of GDOT Districts 2 and 3 in middle Georgia.

“Our crews have been hard at work today pre-treating major highways in metro Atlanta,” Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry said. “We urge everyone in Georgia to limit their travel, as one of the biggest obstacles to the success of our crews is traffic on the roadways. We ask for your help in staying off the highways to ensure your safety and to help us treat Georgia’s highways in a timely manner.”

GDOT urges motorists in the affected areas who do not absolutely have to travel tomorrow to stay off the roads and allow crews the space to safely and effectively do their important work.
