GBI investigating Monday night stabbing

An Mt. Airy man was stabbed during the evening hours Monday night and the perpetrator has been placed behind bars for the vicious attack.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), agents were requested on scene by the Demorest Police Department around 9 p.m. Monday to assist in a stabbing incident.

According to authories, a call was made to Habersham County 911 reporting a stabbing at Demorest Court Apartments.

Upon arrival, officers learned that the victim of the stabbing, Miguel Axel Pascual, 18, of Mt. Airy, had been transported to the Habersham County Medical Center to be treated for stab wounds.

Witnesses at the scene reported that Pascual had been stabbed with a knife at the residence by Francisco Matias, 18, of Cornelia, who fled the scene. Matias was later arrested at the Habersham County Medical Center where he was being treated for injuries sustained while fleeing the scene.

Matias was charged with aggravated assault as a result of the incident and is currently being housed at the Habersham County Jail, awaiting court proceedings. Pascual is currently being treated at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he remains in stable condition.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Once complete, the investigation will be
provided to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
