GA Power sponsoring Rabun County Library’s scrapbook competition

To celebrate Rabun County’s Bicentennial year, the library has designed a scrapbook competition in which nonprofit organizations throughout Rabun County will be able to create a scrapbook that showcases their organization’s contributions to the community over the years.

They will then enter their scrapbook in the Rabun County Bicentennial Better Home Town Competition. The scrapbooks will be judged and a Grand Prize of $1000.00 will be awarded to the winning nonprofit organization through a generous contribution made by Georgia Power. All of the scrapbooks entered into the competition will become the property of Rabun County Library and will be properly archived in the library’s special collections for
future generations to research and enjoy.

Rabun County nonprofit organizations may sign up for the competition February 18th – March 30th, 2019. The entry fee for the competition is $25.00 and each organization will be given an archival scrapbook stamped with an official competition stamp. All completed scrapbooks must be returned to the library by Friday, August 30th. The Scrapbooks will be judged and a winner declared in September 2019.

In the 1950’s, to encourage economic development in the smaller cities throughout the state, Georgia Power sponsored the Better Home Town Contest. Each community would create a scrapbook that showcased what made their town a “Better Home Town”. From building projects, to economic development, tourism, activities, and organizations, a committee would create a scrapbook that creatively presented all of the town’s best attributes. The committee would then submit the scrapbook to Georgia Power to compete to be a “Better Home Town” winner. Prizes were awarded in categories based on community size. The Rabun County Library currently has 3 of these scrapbooks in its Archived Special Collections for the years 1951, 1952, and 1953.
