Financial Identity Fraud under Investigation in Clayton

The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a financial identity fraud case in Clayton.  On August 1, 2023, a deputy met with a Clayton woman, who said that she received a letter in the mail from a collections company attempting to collect $1,445 for Tidewater Community College in Virginia.  She told the deputy that she never enrolled in the school and contacted them about the letter.  She learned that someone used her personal identification information to fraudulently receive benefits from them.  The school told her to report the identity fraud to local authorities in order to cancel the debt.
