Financial Identity Fraud in Mountain City under Investigation
The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a financial identity fraud case out of Mountain City. On September 13, 2022, a deputy spoke with a woman, who said that she received an email from Walmart stating that she had received a partial shipment of an order. The woman said she did not make a Walmart order, so she looked into the email further. She found that an unknown suspect used her debit card to purchase $216 worth of merchandise that included a grill and a Halloween costume. She told the deputy that the delivery address was in Decatur, Georgia, but that her name was on the receipt. She called the Decatur Police Department to file a report but she was told that because the incident didn’t happen in their jurisdiction, she needed to file a report with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office.
