Felony Theft by Deception under Investigation in Rabun Gap

The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a felony theft by deception case in Rabun Gap.  On February 13, 2023, a deputy took a theft report from a Rabun Gap resident, who stated that someone called him from two different phone numbers stating that they were with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office and that there was a potential warrant for his arrest.  He said that he went to several different places in order to transfer $3,500 to the account given to him by the caller.  He purchased cards from Walmart, Walgreens, and Family Dollar and then transferred the barcodes on the cards to the caller, so he would not be arrested.  The deputy told him that this was a scam.  Government agencies will not ask to be paid in such a way.  Law enforcement will simply arrest you if there is a warrant and they will not call you asking for money to be sent via gift cards.  The case was turned over to the Criminal Investigations Division.
