Felony Theft by Deception Case reported in Clayton

A felony theft by deception case reported in Clayton is under investigation.  On July 25, a deputy of the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office spoke to a woman in regards to a theft that had already occurred.  She said that she has a house for rent and was recently contacted by someone wanting to rent the house at the end of August.  They sent her a check for $5,450, which was an overpayment of $2,586, so she sent them four payments of $500 to cover the overpayment.  When she attempted to cash the original check, it bounced.  The bank advised her that this was a scam that occurs frequently and to file a report and then provided the bank with a copy of the report.  Upon reviewing the case, it was determined that the scam happened inside the city limits of Clayton, so the case has been turned over to the Clayton Police Department.
