Digital traffic sign off 76 W shot down

According to the Rabun County Sheriff’s office, last week a state-owned and very costly Department of Transportation digital traffic sign received significant damage thanks to someone who fired a gun at it.

Authorities say this kind of damage is not tolerated and the investigation is ongoing.

The incident is likely to have taken place sometime between Friday and Saturday in the area of HWY 76 West, prominently one mile from the Towns County Line.

A quick sweep of the area was conducted by the responding deputy to find any shell casings from the bullet(s) but none were located.

The sign was deemed inoperable due to the damage received that impaired the digital lettering and the damage is estimated to be $16,000.

Anyone with information on this particular incident is urged to contact local law enforcememnt.
