Delayed start to School in Rabun County

Students in the Rabun County School System will get an extra week of summer this year due to the coronavirus.  Rabun County Schools Superintendent Dr. April Childers says the start of school has been delayed by one week for students; however, teachers and staff will return as previously scheduled.  “Well here in Rabun County, we have a true partnership with our community when it comes to education and we greatly appreciate their support and encouragement during these unusual times we’re all experiencing.  They were very responsive, we’re thankful for the response that we received from our parents in the calls we made, we called them to get feedback and that really helped us develop a strong plan for reopening.  We always have to keep in mind that COVID-19 is rapidly changing our daily life and anything is subject to change but our intent moving forward is to provide high-quality education in face-to-face for as many students as we can and then an equally high-quality education for those that need to choose virtual.  We’ve worked diligently to develop a comprehensive reopening plan for our staff and students this fall and of course, we’ve used the CDC guidance, the Georgia Department of Education, and our local health officials.  The Health Department has really helped us in developing our protocols to keep our staff and our kids safe.  We plan, our staff returns on August 5, that hasn’t changed but we have moved the start date for our children from August 12 to August 19.  So, students in K-12 will return on August 19 and pre-kindergarten students will start their year on August 24.  That is our plan and we have a roadmap to reopening on the website and in addition to that parents will soon see specific information about the different elements of our safety plan.  We will be working on those in the next two weeks to get that out on our website and Facebook and all other communication possible so that they can have a better understanding of the work that has went into this reopening plan and see how things are going to be different for their children when they do return to campus.”  For those students not ready to return to face-to-face instruction, a 100% virtual learning option is available.
