Current RCS superintendent announces promotions within district at recommendation of new superintendent

With the recent announcement of a new superintendent taking the reigns of the Rabun County School District in July, comes more news of recent promotions from within.

Current Superintendent Melissa Williams will be stepping down from her position and retiring in June, allowing Dr. April Childers to begin her tenure in July with the appointment of two new assistant superintendents, former Primary School Principal Kelly McKay and former High School Principal Jonathan Gibson.

“Dr. Childers has selected Kelly McKay as her second assistant superintendent and Jonathan Gipson as her first. In the high school, we have an assistant principal that Dr. Childers, the board and I believe is ready to step up and take the reigns of the high school, Justin Spillers,” Williams said.

Williams said with the recent changes, that leaves two vacancies that the Board of Education is actively looking to fill.

“Presently we have a vacant seat for the primary school principal position posted, as well as the high school assistant principal position,” she said. “We’re in the process of gathering applications and I’m sure Dr. Childers will be forming committees and setting dates for interviews for those positions as she works with her leadership team to make decisions about filling those vacancies.”
