Crews responding to Iron Mountain Fire

Firefighters are working to contain the Iron Mountain Fire, located approximately 1 mile West of Alaculsy, Tn., in Murray County, Ga. The wildfire is approximately 15 acres in size with 0% containment. It is being managed by a Type 3 incident command team with the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest.  Firefighters first discovered the Iron Mountain Fire on July 13, 2022, and suspect lightning caused the fire.  Initial attack fire crews worked in rugged conditions for two days to contain the fire at the high elevation ridgeline of Iron Mountain, however, the fire moved beyond the initial fire perimeter yesterday. Today additional firefighter crews are responding to the area and will focus efforts to establish new containment lines along the Iron Mountain Trail to the South and along the Gizzard Branch drainage to the West. The Conasauga River provides a natural fire barrier to the North and East of the fire. Weather forecasts predict similar conditions as yesterday when the fire continued to grow, with the high elevation terrain expected to affect fire activity.  Iron Mountain Trail is closed to the public. Please exercise caution when driving on Old GA-2 highway, for the safety of firefighters. There are no road closures or evacuation warnings in place at this time, and no structures are currently threatened by the fire.
