Clayton Police offering to teach Seniors about Scams

Senior citizens lost over $1 billion in scams reported to the FBI in 2020.  In an effort to educate older adults and keep them from becoming victims of scams, the Clayton Police Department is offering to teach seniors about them, says Chief Andy Strait.  “This is a major problem here in Rabun County.  Our citizens are getting taken advantage of by these scammers, these crooks.  We’re hoping the more education we provide the less victims we see.  So, if a church, community organization, or anything wishes to reach out to us, leave me a message, and I’ll get back to you.  We will check the calendar and see if we can get something scheduled as quickly as possible.  It’s just a basic 25-30 minute presentation.  We do a PowerPoint and we do a lot of Q and A.  We really want to focus on some of the Q and A because we know a lot of folks have questions.  I guarantee you that everybody in listening coverage has had at least one phone call a day with someone trying to scam them.  So, we know this is a problem and we’re really wanting to tackle this, and anyway we can help, we’ll surely do our best.”  If you would like to hear a presentation on scams, contact Chief Strait at [email protected] or call 706-782-2181.
