City Council to Hold Public Hearing

The Clayton City Council met yesterday evening.

One topic discussed at the meeting was the possibility of making a section of Hiawassee Street one way, as well as a proposed crosswalk at the intersection of Hiawassee and Main Streets.

Thad Bynum owns Bynum Insurance Agency, and he said that, as “the only for profit business with a Hiawassee Street address,” he is opposed to making Hiawassee Street one way from Main Street to the four way stop.

“We just feel like its going to be a detriment to our business,” said Bynum. “Changing any part of it, you’re doing so at the detriment of my customers and many other citizens in the city and county that use that street both ways.”

He presented options to the council, such as re-installing a red light at the intersection or enforcing the parking in front of the Universal Joint to maintain a clear line of sight for vehicles pulling onto Main Street.

After much discussion, the council decided that more public input was needed, and tabled the issue while planning a public hearing preceding their work session on November 13th at 4 p.m.
