A chase that started in the southern portion of the city of Clayton Tuesday evening reaches speeds of over 100 miles per hour and ends with two crashes in North Carolina.

Assistant Chief of the Clayton Police Department Andy Strait says around 5:45, an officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a driver later identified as 35 year old Jeffrey Bryant Davis of Williamson, South Carolina, who was failing to maintain his lane and not wearing a seatbelt while traveling north on Highway 441.

At that point, Strait says the driver quickly accelerated and the chase was on, with Davis avoiding multiple sets of stop sticks between Clayton and Franklin including one in Dillard, and running more than one red light.

“The suspect ran the red light at Walgreens and continued north into the State of North Carolina,” said Strait. “North Carolina Officers attempted to deploy stop sticks, and he drove around them on two occasions, going into oncoming traffic.”

The driver crashed in the city of Franklin at the Recreation Park’s Pool, and over the course of the chase, a Macon County Sheriff’s Deputy crashed into an embankment to avoid hitting another driver.

Davis was taken to Angel Medical Center, and the deputy was not reported injured.

The investigation led to the discovery that the 2000 Lincoln Continental had been stolen from Anderson County, South Carolina.
