Burn Alert in Fannin County

The US Forest Service, in conjunction with the Georgia Forestry Commission, are planning a joint prescribed burn on Monday, March 22, 2021.  The 936 acre West Skeenah prescribed burn unit is along the east side of Highway 60, in Fannin County, approximately 4 miles south of Morganton.  The burn is expected to start at 10am and last until approximately 5pm.  Based on the latest weather forecast, smoke will impact a small section of Highway 60 around Wilscot Gap and maybe smelt around the Cherry Log and Blue Ridge areas.  Smoke may also be visible in a number of areas along Highway 515, as well as throughout Fannin and Union county.  Motorists are advised to use safe speeds and caution on any roadways if smoke is present.  The Benton Mackaye Trail will be temporarily closed between Wilscot Gap to Skeenah Gap until the area is deemed safe for foot travel.  If weather conditions on-site change or become unfavorable, the controlled burn is subject to being canceled.
