Be Bear Wise this Spring

Spring is here and that means more people will be enjoying the outdoors.  The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests encourages everyone to be Bear Wise.  The Forest Service is pointing out that bird feeders can become bear feeders as well.  Birdseed has lots of calories, over 18,000 calories in a typical 7-pound feeder.  Hummingbird nectar has 3,200 calories in a 32-ounce feeder. So bird feeders can be enticing sources of food for black bears.  The best option is to remove bird feeders and consider other ways to attract birds to your property through water sources and native or natural food sources or plants.
