Back-to-School Officer Training Exercise held at Rabun Co. High School

Law enforcement from multiple jurisdictions surrounded Rabun County High School on Thursday, July 28, 2022.  It was part of a back-to-school officer training exercise, explains Rabun County Sheriff Chad Nichols.  “We invited all the law enforcement in the county and even state agencies that could be responding to an event if it happened at our school campus.  We had a resident, Matt Slappy, who helps us out a lot at the Sheriff’s Office with different things, he volunteered this program that he does.  Basically, it went over the Uvalde School shooting.  Not Monday morning quarterbacking, but just reading through the after-action report and seeing if there is anything that we could do differently here that they’ve discovered through the after-action of that incident.  So, it’s mainly just trying to keep everything fresh and see if there are any new ideas out there that we might implement along with the school system.  So, just creating the partnerships and teamwork of all the law enforcement in our area along with the school system to benefit our children and the safety of our children and our faculty and staff while they are at school.”  After the exercise in the morning, officers conducted hands-on training in the afternoon to prepare for the upcoming school year.
