Attorney General Looking at Allegations

The Attorney’s General’s office is looking into a complaint made by Sheriff’s Candidate Shawn Wilson regarding his personnel file.

Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brian Rickman says that Wilson’s complaint alleges that there were documents in his file that should not have been in the file according to Georgia law.

Rickman explained what the Attorney General’s office is looking for.

“What they’re looking for is, ‘is there any evidence that warrants an investigation of anything criminal?’ ” said Rickman. “Not policy violations, not political questions, is there any evidence that there has been crimes committed.”

Rickman went on to give some insight into what might constitute a criminal act in a situation that deal with personnel files such as this.

“The only things that come to mind would be if there were documents that were altered, and I don’t know of any evidence of that,” said Rickman. “There are some documents from other organizations that have special classifications and can only be disclosed under certain circumstances, things of that nature.”

Rickman said there are multiple reasons he requested the Attorney General’s assistance in this matter.

“I basically recused myself for several different reasons, one being that the former Sheriff works for me.”

Wilson again voiced this allegation during a debate between the two candidates for Sheriff on Friday.
