Attempted Forgery in Clayton under Investigation

The Criminal Investigations Division of the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office is looking into a third-degree forgery case in Clayton. The victim spoke to a deputy about an attempted $4,500 check fraud. She said she was contacted by someone in an attempt to obtain services from her business. The person claimed that they had just purchased property on Shady Side Drive in Clayton and needed to have the property cleaned. An estimate was given to the person and then they sent a check. The person was very persistent about the business cashing the check. The victim stated that she contacted the bank where the check came from and learned that the check was fraudulent. The bank also said that they believed this was an attempt to get her to cash the check, then the person would ask the bank for a refund, and the business would be on the hook for the check. The victim told the deputy that this was the second time she had dealt with a situation like this in regard to the property. The victim did not cash the check.
