Arrest Made After Manhunt

A new K-9 unit with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office tracks down a fugitive first day on the job.

The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office received information that a man identified as Sam Hopkins, who had felony warrants for Aggravated Battery for an incident that occurred on July 6th, was at a residence on Jiles Road.

Lieutenant Mark Jones with the Sheriff’s Office says that when officers arrived, Hopkins made a break for it.

“When officers approached the residence, he left the residence from the back door running through the woods. A canine officer was on scene and tracked the subject for approximately two hours. The track led us back to the residence he had originally left from, and we found him inside hiding.”

Hopkins was taken into custody, as well as a female identified as Shannon Smith who was charged with hindering the apprehension of a fugitive.
