Protest Was Legal, Not City Organized

The city of Clayton responds to multiple questions regarding the small protest against SPLOST over the weekend.

Saturday during Winterfest, a few people stood in the downtown Clayton area with signs opposing the Special Purpose Local Option Sales tax, and there was some question as to whether or not the city of Clayton was involved in the organization of that protest.

Clayton City Attorney Mitch Baker says that is not the case, and also answered the question as to whether or not the protest required a permit.

“The activities that were described to me I think involved three people, and they were at various locations downtown. I don’t believe that is something that’s anticipated. In fact, most of the language in the permit ordinance talks specifically about parades and marches.”

Baker says that the council could look into making that an activity one that would require a permit.
