Over Ten Miles of Roads Will be Safer in Northeast Georgia

According to a DOT press release, Working to reduce crashes, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced a construction project awarded to a contractor this week that will improve the safety on Northeast Georgia’s highways. DOT compiled a list of highways with frequent wet weather crashes. Engineers rode those highways to determine the severity of each curve. Curve data and the posted speed limits were compared to National Standards. That strategic review became the basis for this project. The DOT plans to enhance visibility of curves in the roads by adding reflective raised pavement markers, reflective striping and additional signage. A total of 10.75 miles on five roads in Northeast Georgia will see these improvements, with the largest being 6.4 miles over 53 sections of US 76 in Rabun County. Nine sections of US 76 in Towns County will also gain the improvements. A completion date is set for June 30, 2016.
