Officials Caution Drivers During Winter Weather

Local officials weigh in on travel throughout Rabun County during this winter storm.

Darren Giles, the director of Rabun County Road Department, said to be careful when traveling off of the beaten path.

“Your primary roads are pretty good,” said Giles. “Your secondary roads are starting to get a good bit of snow on them, but we’re working as hard as we can to get them salted.”

Giles did report scattered downed trees throughout the county due to the weather.

The Director of Rabun County Emergency Management Marty Dixon reported several accidents in the county due to vehicle slipping and sliding across the slick roadways.

Teri Pope with the Georgia Department of Transportation urged citizens not to be out on the roads unless absolutely necessary.

“We still urge extreme caution,” said Pope. “Especially with temperatures dropping bridges are very susceptible to ice forming quickly.”

For motorists that have to be on the road, Pope said to watch out for DOT Dump Trucks.

“Do not pass the DOT Dump Truck.”

Pope said that passing a DOT Dump Truck can be dangerous and possibly cause vehicular damage.
