Nantahala fire victim welcomed home

By Keith Giles

Almost two months after being seriously injured in a house fire, a young girl from Macon County returns home on New Year’s Day.

The day was very special for nine-year-old Daphne McCoy who had been undergoing treatment at the Augusta burn center since the fire in November. Daphne’s father, Brad McCoy was killed in the fire trying to rescue his other child and wife, who had already escaped.

As she returned to Macon County Thursday, Daphne was greeted with lines of community members, local volunteer fire departments, law enforcement, emergency responders, and others, who gathered around Highway 441.

As Daphne continues her road to recovery, donations can be made to the family through United Community Bank.
