Investigation underway into Email Scam involving Gold

An investigation is underway into a new email scam involving gold.  The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office reports that on April 28, 2020, a deputy took a report from a woman who stated that she received two packages in the mail with one ounce of gold in each.  She then received an email asking if she received the packages and that they needed to be mailed to a different address.  She called the sender, which was a metal exchange company, who advised her that there is a scam going around where people steal a PayPal account, buy gold with it, ship it to some random person, and have that person ship it to the thief.  Investigators are now trying to determine who sent the emails.
