HEMC Urges Members to Trim or Remove Trees Before Winter

With the recent wind and rains, trees falling on electrical lines interrupted power for thousands of Habersham EMC members. With winter approaching, now is a good time to trim or remove any trees that are of concern. Here is some information to consider regarding tree trimming and removal:

  • Habersham EMC maintains a 15 feet right-of-way on each side an electrical line. Trimming and removal of trees and shrubs beyond this right-of-way are the responsibility of the property owner. The property owner may choose to do the work themselves or hire a third party, such as a tree service.
  • Per Georgia law, the property owner is required to call 811 for an overhead line locate before working within 10 feet of overhead lines.
  • If the tree falls on the line during the trimming/removal, do not attempt to cut the tree off the line. Avoid the area and call HEMC immediately as the tree may become energized.
  • In many cases, with advance notice, HEMC crews can temporarily disconnect a service and take the line down in order for the tree to be trimmed or removed by the property owner or service contractor.
  • Refer to the Right of Way Maintenance page of habershamemc.com for more information and tips on landscaping near power lines and equipment.
