Governor Nathan Deal rescinds Statement; Allows Syrian Refugees

Since the November 13th Paris attacks, one hot-button issue has been whether or not states would accept Syrian refugees. Many states, including Georgia, and the Carolinas, made the announcement that they would not be accepting refugees from war-torn Syria, as a way to protect their current residents. On Monday, one Governor recanted his statement.

Governor Nathan Deal changed his mind on Monday about his stance on accepting Syrian refugees. This decision came just days after State Attorney General Sam Olens said that the state can not legally reject refugees from resettling, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Syrian refugees are now permitted to fill out paperwork to receive food stamps, medicaid, and other benefits in the Peach State. At one time, 31 Governors made the announcement that they would not accept Syrian refugees from resettling within their state’s borders.
