Fire claims home, chickens in West Macon

On Monday night at 8:46 p.m. West Macon Fire and Rescue was dispatched for a fully involved structure fire at 200 Board Tree Road.

Upon arrival to the scene found a 2 story residence fully engulfed in flames.  The homeowner on scene was outside the residence and was not injured.  The homeowner states the fire began in the area of a wood stove and he attempted to extinguish the flames for approximately 45 minutes before the smoke and fire forced him to exit the house. Due to the location of the residence and the homeowner not having a phone to call 911, the fire was not seen and reported by a passerby for nearly an hour and a half from time of ignition.

Clarks Chapel Fire and Rescue and Otto Fire and Rescue provided mutual aid.  The mutual aid departments established water supply from Poplar Cove Creek at Smith Hill Road.  Approximately 20,000 gallons of water, and 30 gallons of foam was used to extinguish the fire.

The fire was under control in 50 minutes of fire department dispatch.  While there were no resident or fire service injuries, the homeowner lost 20-30 chickens that were in chicken houses in close proximity to the fire.

The home was a total loss.
