Clayton Man Scammed Out of Money

A Clayton man is scammed earlier this month.

On January 28th, a deputy with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office spoke with a 76 year old man in Clayton who said he had been contacted by someone claiming to be a Marine with the U.S Embassy in Ecuador.

That person told the Clayton man that a family member was incarcerated in Ecuador, and money needed to be sent in order to post bond.

The report on file with the Sheriff’s Offise states the Clayton man sent the money, only to discover that his relative was still in the United States.

Investigator Gerald Johnson with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office says to watch out for scams of all kinds.

“The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone that if something sounds too good to be true or sounds far fetched, please contact the Sheriff’s Office and have us verify if the information is correct or not.”

A similar scam was reported in October of 2012.

Also, the IRS has already reported various tax scams this season.
