RCSO alerts public of GA Power scam

A scam targetting Georgia Power consumers has been reported to the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office multiple times already this week and authorities want you to be on high alert.

According to Rabun County Sheriff Chad Nichols, several citizens residing in Rabun County have reported that Georgia Power has called claiming that the customer’s account is past due and that the electricity will be disconnected if the customer does not provide payment immediately.

Often, the customer is asked to purchase a pre-paid debit card and provide the account number on the card. With access to the account number, criminals use the money on the pre-paid card for their own benefit.

“Both residential and commercial customers have been victimized by this unethical tactic. Criminals operating in Georgia and other parts of the Southeast have frequently targeted senior citizens or those speaking English as a second language,” said Nichols.

Law enforcement wants you to remember that Georgia Power will never call or visit customers to ask for personal or financial information like a credit card, debit card, banking information, or social security number over the phone.
