Clayton appoints two on ethics committee

CLAYTON — This past Tuesday, the Clayton City Council appointed two new members to the Ethics Ordinance and Committee.

The purpose of the Clayton Ethics Committee is to investigate complaints of an ethical nature regarding Clayton’s elected officials.

Clayton City Attorney Mitch Baker informed the council and those in attendance of the regularly scheduled meeting that the City of Clayton is committed to adhering to a code of practice and professional responsibilities to help guide all city government codes and practices.

Those responsibilities, he said, include the principles, values, standards and rules of behavior that guide all of the decisions, procedures and systems of Clayton in a way that positively contribute to the welfare of its citizens, businesses, visitors and staff.

By Georgia law, the Ethics Committee consists of three persons, one appointed by the Mayor, one appointed by the Council, and the third member is decided by a recommendation from the two appointees, which the Mayor and Council may then vote on.

Clayton Mayor Jordan Green nominated local business owner Josh Brown to be appointed on the ethics committee, which the Council expressed minor opposition with. Regardless, the motion to appoint Brown on the committee carried and was approved.

The Council’s recommendation was to appoint retired Clayton resident, Pomeroy Sinnock, which was voted in favor of with no opposition.

The next step will require Brown and Sinnock to meet and collectively come up with a joint decision as to who they feel would be the best third appointee of the ethics committee.
